A more thoughtful way to experience Alaska
About The Alaska Edit
The Alaska Edit is an independent Alaska travel guide created by Mary Jacquel in Juneau, Alaska.
It is designed to help travelers make better decisions about where to go, what to book, and how to experience Alaska well. The guides, stories, and photography throughout the site are shaped by living in Alaska and exploring the state firsthand.
Hi, I’m Mary
I live in Juneau, Alaska, and created The Alaska Edit as a place to share what I am learning as I explore more of the state.
Some of that work is practical: how to choose a whale watching trip, get around Juneau, plan time in Denali, or decide which experiences deserve an advance reservation. Other stories begin farther out, aboard a small boat in Glacier Bay, at a remote bear stream, on a trail, or somewhere along Alaska’s coast.
Together, they are an evolving record of Alaska and a resource for people who want to experience more of it for themselves.

Come along for a little while
I spend as much time as I can exploring Alaska for myself, from places that are easy to reach to experiences that take a little more effort to find. This short film from Glacier Bay is a glimpse of what that looks like, and of the perspective behind The Alaska Edit.

If you are planning an Alaska trip, begin with the destination guides and planning resources. If you're simply curious about the state, start with the stories, Field Notes, or Alaska Explained.
I’m so glad you’re here.
There’s so much Alaska to share.
Mary
I went to Mendenhall to photograph Nugget Falls, but a bear crossing the road was my first surprise. Frost along the trail, the last yellow leaves, and fresh snow on the mountains kept me stopping. It was a little glimpse of Juneau between fall and winter, and plenty to notice before reaching the waterfall.
